Knowledge of things nearly eternal

A mild and misty Monday morning.

Today, standing at my favourite morning spot, the mountains behind me, the woods full of wildlife surrounding me and the cries of the seagulls almost the only clue to the presence of the great lake below me, a snatch of a quotation came to me out of the autumn mist, and sent me running home to Rachel Carson. Not for the more famous Silent Spring, but for her first book, Under the Sea Wind, and this passage:

"To stand at the edge of the sea, to sense the ebb and flow of the tides, to feel the breath of a mist moving over a great salt marsh, to watch the flight of shore birds that have swept up and down the surf lines of the continents for untold thousands of years, to see the running of the old eels and the young shad to the sea, is to have knowledge of things that are as nearly eternal as any earthly life can be. These things were before man ever stood on the shore of the ocean and looked out upon it with wonder; they continue year in, year out, throughout the centuries and ages, while man's kingdoms rise and fall."

I'd say that just about covers it.

Silence, solitude and a bite on the line

Continuing what has been a surreal winter with warm weather and bright sunshine. No rain to speak of, and no snow this side of the Alps.

Driftwood

After the storms of recent weeks, the modest shingle beach at Carmine Inferiore, which we call our own, is piled high with driftwood. One particular tree-trunk has been tied to the shore. It still bucks and canters with the waves - a sea-horse offering magical rides to little imaginations, and a plethora of textures to young photographers...

Minus four last night, rising to minus one at 8am. But the sun is now shining down benignly, warming Carmine's old bones.

And so do I...thanks to Sindaco Albertella and Vice-Sindaco Cattaneo for despatching workmen to Carmine with such speed - in Carmine, small improvements make a big difference! Vi ringraziamo molto.

Across Lago Maggiore

Winter morning sunshine through the trees.

Cloud line

Bright but knee-numblingly cold this morning (and I haven't even been outside yet). Many of Carmine Superiore's roofs are dusted with hard frost again. The hen who thinks its clever to escape the chicken coop every night was found in a tree this morning with a crust of frost on her back-feathers. Don't anyone tell me the temperature, I don't want to know!

Jonathan Stylites

A tropical eight degrees at 2pm this Immaculate Conception. If you could walk in mist like fallen autumn leaves, today you'd be knee deep in it. The clouds hang so low over the lake you feel you have to duck in case you bang your head. In certain places and at certain times the mist dissolves into rain.

This Jonathan picture is posted today to remind me of the last day of pure, bright sunshine, when I tool a seat on Cannobio's lungolago, next to the ferry port and read my book in the sun.

Jonathan and friends...

The day started bright and sunny, sending broad shafts of light bouncing off interior white walls and the honey-coloured woodwork. Warm enough in the sun for breakfast outdoors, but with the ground frozen solid and the broccoli wilting. By midday, snow clouds gathering.

...waiting for the Lago Maggiore ferry.
