Also at Easter

Cool and overcast. Threatening more rain.

Easter delights

Sunny but windy on Pasquetta - Easter Monday in Italy. And we're celebrating yesterday's safe arrivals...

A belated Happy Easter to all.

Quote of the week No. 45 : On guests

Coolish and overcast. Damp after light unaccustomed rain.

There is, I'm told, a Russian proverb which goes like this:

"The guest has not to thank the host, rather, the host should thank the guest."

After a week in which Carmine Superiore has been visited by hundreds of intrepid walkers, and our house in particular has been graced every day by the presence of guests who arrived from the length and breadth of Europe, the day promises to be a quiet one.

Before 'normal' life resumes (it's all relative), I'd like to say thank-you in the Russian way to all who came to our home, and made our Easter so happy and, having mixed business with pleasure, so productive.

And thank-you to all who came to Easter Mass, for which the church of San Gottardo, jewel of Lago Maggiore, was heaving at the seams.

Spasibo!

Happy Easter/Buona Pasqua

The last of my camellias and the first of my roses -
for today's Easter mass.

Easter greetings...
...and may your springtime garden - whatever shape and form it happens to take - grow beautiful, healthy and fertile.

Not St George's Day

Coolish, benignly overcast, and with patches of damp where it tried to rain last night.

For the whole of my life, 23 April has been St George's Day, that day when the English agonise over whether to celebrate their patron saint or whether it would all be too politically incorrect for words. Well not this 23 April. And that's because today is also Holy Saturday, when there are traditionally no divine services until the evening's Easter Vigil.

So that George gets a look-in somewhere along the line this year he's been shifted to Monday, when there will undoubtedly be plenty of angst-free celebrations in other places where he's the patron saint, such as Malta, Palestine, Istanbul, Moscow, Venice, Saskatchewan, Beirut, Moscow, Genoa, Constantinople and Brissago.

In the meantime, here's a quick slain dragon to keep you in the mood...

The dragon slain, church door, Varzo

Hooray for brave knights on white chargers rescuing fair maidens in distress!

A rose for Monday

Warm and sunny, and dry, dry, dry.

In my garden, the first roses are blooming.
This one is to wish you a happy Easter Week.

Easter in Carmine

Azure skies. Fast-flowing mountain streams. Blossom on the fruit trees. Camelias red, pink and white. Warm, wet, freshly-turned soil. Eggs under the broody hen. Chicks trying their wings. The Mama cat heavy with kittens. Children smeared with chocolate. The Carmenites in residence. Tourists in droves.

A belated happy Easter from a Carmine sprung to life.

Yesterday...

Yesterday, the temperature recorded in the shade on a south-facing terrazza in Carmine Superiore was 25°C. Warm enough for a sleeveless T-shirt. Warm enough for the children to decide it was time to go under the garden hose in the altogether. Sunny enough for strap marks and sunscreen.

And talking of yesterday, many thanks to everyone who turned up at our beautiful little church in yesterday morning's glorious sunshine to help lift outside all the wooden furniture and give it a healthy dose of anti-woodworm medicine. With so many hands, the job was done in a jiffy, and everything put back shipshape and Bristol fashion in time for a quick aperitivo before we all went our ways for lunch.

After lunch, this family hotfooted it into the garden where we cut the grass (on a slope of one-in-two that's a major operation), planted tomatoes, chilli peppers and cucumbers. Oh yes, and basil, which AJ calls pesto-plant.

And today? Well, today I'll be endeavouring to find a sensible place to plant three zucchini, six strawberries (in a garden already packed with strawberries) and some parsley (in a garden where this year the parsley seeds have germinated where they never before did). And I'm hoping the weather's warm enough again for more sunscreen and two happily naked bottoms.

Happy Easter!

And cheers! I'm drinking a glass of fizz for Easter, after a 40-day drought, and it's delicious. I raise my glass to you, my cyber-friends, but in particular to Braja, and to her recovery.
