These hands

Brrrrrr! Cold. Damp. Raining continuously. Fourteen degrees at 8:30am. I think it's called autumn.

These hands belong to Carmine's most senior senior citizen. I often come across her in the afternoons, barefoot in the long grass, bent double, sickle in hand, patiently collecting an enormous bundle of greenery for her goat.

Signora Cesarina celebrated her 95th birthday last week.

Beautiful! This is probably what keeps her so agile and active at her age!? That - and some red wine perhaps?

This reminds me of an old photograph seen years ago of a pair of hands with the caption, "many an old craftsman, his working hands at rest, has left a heritage for us to preserve and our priveledge to persue".

Yes, red wine and a diet of mainly home grown vegetables, with lots of tomatoes and pasta.

My grandmother-in-law is also 95. She's still on her feet, and still causing trouble. I noticed the last time I visited her that she packs away the food at every meal (she can still bake a delicious cake, by the way). So many older people stop eating simply because they don't enjoy cooking. Perhaps eating well (and the occasional drop of the blushful Hippocrene, of course) is one of the keys to longevity?

God love her.
What a sweet picture.
What an inspiration too. Keep working, keep taking care of something or someone that is dependent on you. I hope I'm that capable in my old age. My Great Aunt is 87. She is still in pretty good shape. She's always taken care of somebody else. Right now she has no one to take care of and we see her starting to fail.
It's sad.
Thank you for sharing her with us.
